Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Sherlock Holmes? Nancy Drew? The Hardy Boys? Have you ever wanted to solve a mystery? Sometimes the best ones are real. Help me to introduce my students to Informational texts by reading about real life mysteries.
I am a third grade teacher with a specialization in reading and language development.
I teach in a low-income school, and more than half of my students are learning English as a second language. My students try so hard in school everyday to do their best work and I want to ensure that I have the best materials for them to work with.
My Project
So many of my students are struggling with learning a new language and learning to read in this new language. They do not have English language models at home, so many of them need be given the tools they require for language acquisition during the school day. Literature circles are a great way to engage students in reading, however to implement them I need multiple copies of several high interest books. I am particularly interested in books that allow my students to act as detective as they gather clues and create hypothesis. With these book sets, my students will be able to read a high-interest informational text together and, in small groups, apply their newly developed "good reader" skills (such as asking questions, making connections and creating hypothesis). This experience will help them build the academic skills that they will need as they transition from learning to read to reading to learn.
My students are a wonderful group of children who are beginning to love literature.
I want to provide them with as much exposure as possible. I know there are many needy students and many needy classrooms all over the country, but this is MY classroom and these are MY students, and I just want to do everything that I can to make sure they succeed.
