My desire for each and every one of my students is to gain high mastery of the skill of reading. I want my students to read not just to "get through school", but because they enjoy it. I am currently working to build a high interest supply of independent reading books for my middle school classroom.
My students are energetic, sarcastic and slightly awkward middle school kids.
We are from a rural, Title 1 school where the sheep often escape the pasture next to our classroom window. Maybe they love to read books, too, though I'm only requesting books for the kids. The sheep will have to get their own DonorsChoose account. Back to my students; I love them. They inspire me to continue to grow and learn and I want to provide support for them on their journey of growth and learning in my classroom.
My Project
My students are funny, not in the "lol" sense, but in the fact that they desire so much to be grown up, yet they need the adults in their lives so much. I am so grateful for the opportunity to be able to make an impact on who they will become. My desire for them is simple: that they would become readers, people who read by choice. I want them to have sophisticated, well-grounded opinions on what they like to read and who they are as readers. I want them to be able to have conversations with others about books. I want them to visit the library, and not just for movies. I want them to recommend books to their friends. I want them to wish that Yankee Candle would make a book scent candle (okay maybe that's just me). I want them to choose to read rather than turning on the television. I want them to read to their children. I want them to see the intrinsic value in reading. This project would provide more high interest, level appropriate books at their finger tips in my classroom to develop readers.
As a second year language arts teacher, my classroom library can be described as a bit bare, to put it mildly.
This project would provide more options for my students in reading levels, genres, authors, subject matter and simply more books in my classroom library. The more high interest books I can present to my kids the more I can get them to buy in to the philosophy that reading is important and it can be fun and fulfilling.
