Ms. Ramirez from Chicago IL is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

That Moment When A Reluctant Reader Picks Up A Book

My students need books that are appealing to kids their age (teenagers), including themes like Just for Boys, Coming of Age, Science Fiction and Favorite Series. Our school does not have a library and my classroom library is very limited.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Don't you love that crack you hear when opening up a new book? I sure do, and so do my students. The problem is, that on my limited resources, my students don't get to hear that sound very often.

My students are in different grade levels but have one thing in common.

They have a love for learning particularly when it comes to reading about topics they can relate to. I have been able to provide my students with a couple stories that have actually brought tears to their (and my) eyes because of how they connect with it. Unfortunately, my school does not have a library so they do not have a big selection of books to choose from. I would like to be able to provide my students with books that they choose to read that deal with the issues teenagers deal with. Creating lifelong readers is one of my main priorities.

My Project

These books will be placed in my classroom bookshelf (library) separated by topic/genre and will be checked out by the students on a weekly basis. If they are not done with a book, they will be able to renew it until they are done reading it. This will not be part of their grade and they will not get penalized for not reading for enjoyment, but they will soon realize that by reading, they are becoming a better reader. In turn, this will help them become better students and achieve higher academic success.

Your donation will help put books in the hands of children who will read these books for enjoyment and not because they are required to read for homework.

I cannot explain the feeling of joy a teacher gets when a child asks to borrow a book to read for leisure.
