We have such a diverse group of kids at my school: kids from all different backgrounds and from different socioeconomic levels. We have gifted kids and kids with special needs.
I work directly with students who struggle with reading and math and who need some extra help to get caught up.
Many of my students are English Language Learners. They all have something in common. They all love to learn. They also love reading new books and experiencing new things.
My Project
We have started something new at our school that celebrates the diversity of our students! Schoolwide, whenever a student has a birthday, they get to pick out a diverse book to add to their classroom library. The book is read in honor of the child, and then other children can read it throughout the year.
Something inspiring happens when students see books where the characters look like them!
They are proud! They are noticed! The classroom libraries in our school become stronger because students relate to the characters they are reading about.
These books, such as Amazing Grace, Jingle Dancer, Shades of People, and One Green Apple will all go in the Diverse Birthday Book collection to be shared with all the classrooms in our school all year long. It is a great way to celebrate literacy and our individuality at the same time! Thank you for considering our proposal!
