Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a College and Career Coordinator at an urban school, I work with students from all grades and backgrounds. The Career Center is always open for students to come work, learn, and plan for their futures. Our students are motivated and eager to accomplish their post-secondary goals!
70% of our students are eligible for free or reduced lunch, and many come from disadvantaged homes.
At home, many of our students face financial struggles and difficulty accessing the resources necessary for their successful transition to life after high school. All of our students should have access to the opportunities and supports they need to thrive in whatever path they choose. I hope to be able to provide the tools necessary for my students to achieve their goals!
My Project
Every year our school hosts a Financial Literacy Fair for Junior students. Help me provide pocket folders and colored paper to make informational packets for our students who participate in our Financial Literacy Fair.
This event supports the development of financial literacy skills, and the opportunity for students to get a glimpse of finances in the real world.
The lessons learned at the fair will educate students on financial challenges they may face after graduation - purchasing a car, living expenses, and paying back a college degree. The knowledge and tools presented at the fair will develop skills and cultivate a deeper knowledge of financial reality based on a specific career path.
All students are assigned a career and corresponding salary, a credit score, and budget worksheet to help them work through their estimated monthly expenses. How will you live within your means while you pay for housing, utilities, transportation, clothing, food and a college loan payment on the salary you were given?
