Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
There goes Alex hanging out by the library again. Ever since I banned "Captain Underpants" comics from their reading choices some students have found themselves lost. They look at cover after cover, and never choose. I offer them books that are high interest in their age level but they look at it and shrug, "It looks boring!"
I teach 6th grade at a downtown Los Angeles charter school. Many of our students don't spend time outside of school with books or with any other literacy related activities. I am very aware that one of the major struggles at our school is that our students are below grade level in reading. Our student population is composed of mostly English language learners. We use strategies that help us reach all learners at their levels but many of our students continue to be below grade level.
I'm interested in creating a culture of reading in my class where students will enjoy reading and continue to strive for success in reading. One major interest seems to rely on the relevance of the material that students are reading. That is why I am asking for literature that represents my students' lives. By presenting them with Latino and African American topics in literature I am hoping to inspire their interest in reading and at the same time demonstrate to them that there are published authors that have similar experiences as them. I thank you in advance for this opportunity.
