My students are amazing. I teach in a socio-economically disadvantaged area. Too many of my students have to grow up too fast. They take on grownup worries at an age when they should be shielded from these troubles. They come to school wanting love, support, and kindness. I do my best to give them all of these things and an education on top of that.
I am in constant awe of my kids and their abilities to cope with hard situations every day.
The resilience they show in the face of obstacles inspires me. Their neighborhood isn't always a safe place. Our classroom and our school is, and must be, a place students can find help, safety, discipline, and guidance. Many of our students have trouble affording basic school supplies like binders and pencils. My kids may not have much, but they deserve the best when it comes to learning. I know from personal experience that education is the path out of poverty. I want to help my students break the poverty cycle through a love of learning.
My Project
A love of reading is a life long gift. Finding the right books to hook middle school students is crucial. Boring books, or books preteens can not identify with, are books they won’t read. Putting the right books in the hands of these same kids can change lives.
Wouldn’t you want to read a book you thought was about your life?
The series of Joey Pigza books are books my students see themselves, and their family members, in every year I read this book to my class. The characters in this book face some of the same challenges my students face. Life lessons are the main reason I read this book to my class every year.
I have read this book to every class for about 10 years. The students always love it and ask for me to continue reading the whole series. This year I hope to have a copy for each student so we can read it as a class.
