My 12 and 13-year-old students have gone to school together for most of their lives. They are a group of down-to-earth kids from a small, rural town in Pennsylvania. Since many of them have been together since Pre-K, the students and their families know each other well. Almost 60% of the students qualify for a free or reduced-price lunch.
Despite challenges in economic status of our students, our school district ranked 61st out of 493 schools in Pennsylvania.
Students, parents, teachers, and administrators are proud of our students' efforts academically. We are fortunate to have a student-teacher ratio of about 12:1.
We are lucky in that students have 1:1 access to technology. The students in grades 7-12 use Chromebooks. Students are extremely receptive to using technology in their learning.
Because the students and their families are so close, they do have a large influence on each other. I am hoping that we can use this fact in a positive way to spread kindness to others.
My Project
With technology being the forefront of today's world, I want to teach my students how to organize a simple, written thank you note. This activity will be used as a bell-ringer in our English Language Arts classes on Thursdays, which will appropriately be named "Thank You Thursdays." Not only will students be practicing their writing, but they will be spreading kindness and cheer. It is my hope that the intrinsic feelings created by this activity will spur them to be kinder overall and to see that one small act of kindness can mean the world to someone.
In a world often filled with negativity, I would like my 7th graders to experience what it feels like to be kind and show gratitude without expectation.
My plan is for them to use the assorted cards to create thank you notes to important people in their lives...parents, grandparents, teachers, administrators, coaches, neighbors, friends, etc. We will use the Forever stamps to allow each of them to send a thank you note to someone who they may not always see in person. Their thank you cards will be meant to be a surprise to those who are receiving them. We will be able to do about six weeks of Thank You Thursdays with the items that I am requesting.
It is my hope that this act of kindness will not only warm the hearts of the recipients, but also inspire others to do the same! I am also hoping that students will continue this gesture on their own at times they deem appropriate. I want them to see that this small act of gratitude is truly larger than life.
