Hungry to Learn. Our 4th graders continually rise to whatever expectations we set for them. They are willing to work hard and persevere. The 4th grade team works together to create engaging lessons and find materials that will challenge low and average learners while still captivating the highest learners.
My classroom typically has 17-22 students from low to middle class families.
Our school consists of grades K-4 and provides an integrated and innovative learning environment. We have several teachers who have been awarded The Pioneer Valley Excellence in Teaching Award. Our goal is to prepare students for the rigors of a college education and to be good citizens in their communities.
My Project
We have an exciting opportunity to work with a curriculum that has come highly recommended to us from teachers who are working with it. This curriculum is Wit and Wisdom. We will begin with the first unit which is a study of the literal and figurative heart. In order to implement this study, we will need a set of novels and informational text for our grade level.
What I appreciate most is that the reading, writing, vocabulary and grammar are woven into quality texts that have been carefully chosen to build knowledge and deep understanding of a topic.
This curriculum was reviewed by an independent source and met all the expectations on many different levels. One quote from a teacher was very encouraging: “I believed the underlying purpose of Wit & Wisdom was to ensure that students become great readers, which in turn would inform their writing. Our students have tremendously grown in their reading and ability to write fluently.” A quote from one of her students was equally encouraging: “Instead of reading short stories in text books, we’re reading chapter books. We’re learning new things that I don’t think I would have ever learned before. Sometimes the books are challenging — but I like it! It’s really exciting.”
My students need these texts to keep them highly engaged and to think critically about the world around them.
