Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students are 6th and 7th graders at a Title I middle school in the Bronx. Most of our students are Latino (75 %) and the remainders are African-American. In addition to regular classes, I also teach two bilingual classes. My bilingual students are very eager to learn social studies, however, since they are bilingual students/English Language Learners, most can only say a few words in English, let alone read English. My 7th grade bilingual students would greatly benefit from a class set of 25 U.S. history textbooks in Spanish. These textbooks would not replace instruction, however they would supplement the instruction I give to ensure that all of my bilingual students are learning history, regardless of their English proficiency. The proposal: Provide a class set of 25 of the U.S. history textbook "One Nation, Many People: Volume 1" (Una Nacion, Muchos Pueblos in Spanish) published by Globe Fearon. These books will not only benefit students this year, but all of the future bilingual students who will attend my middle school.
