Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My second grade classroom is comprised of 27 creative and enthusiastic students. They are eager to express themselves through writing, speaking, art projects, and inquiry based learning. My students are working on adding more art, science, and technology standards to our language arts and math lessons for a deeper connection to the material. Additionally, groups work better when they can move around the classroom and learn from different environments.
Almost all of our class comes from low-income homes with little to no access for a creative outlet.
What we complete in class is often the only time they use art supplies, have access to readily available books, and receive immediate praise. Building a community of kindness and academics is important to my students, and we are excited to work on projects that allow us to do so.
My Project
I am working hard to create independent readers who can ask and answer questions about the text. My students are working on becoming text evidence detectives who can find the answers in whatever source they are reading. I want my students to be able to easily identify the information they are looking for to support their claim.
By identifying evidence and reasons within the text, my students will be showing higher level thinking and comprehension of the texts they read.
Having a hand held tool to do so will meet the needs of my various students using multiple learning styles. When my students have access to these jumbo magnifiers, I know they will be more engaged while making connections.
