Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day in our classroom is full of learning, love, and adventures. They are a group of bright students who have a never-ending appetite for stories. They love books so much that they take them to read during lunch and want to take them home over the weekend! I love their love of reading. It is truly inspiring!
Most of my students come from low-income families and many live in single-parent households.
Books are their escape into a world where they can be anyone they want. With books, they can travel to worlds they never even imagined. I have a classroom of general education, ESL, and inclusion students who are always looking for the next big novel to read. My school has a very supportive environment. The staff, especially the administration, is incredible with students from all backgrounds. My school encourages reading by offering programs that will give them free pizza hut personal pan pizzas, free six flags tickets, and much more for meeting their reading goals!
My Project
My number one goal as a 5th reading teacher is to encourage my students to love to read. What better way to do that than to give them a great book to read? The Texas Bluebonnet Award committees annually choose a master list of children's literature written and published in the United States. The award is designed to meet a wide variety of student interests and to facilitate discussion of literature among elementary students. This project is a request for all 20 books from the 2018-2019 Texas Bluebonnet Award Master list because having the books available in my personal classroom library provides my students with more opportunities to read them whenever they can without having to wait for them to become available at our school library. Providing access to a wide variety of books such as these to students who are reluctant to read or who do not have books to read at home can be life-changing!
My hope is that students will become hooked on these Bluebonnet books and consequently be able to hold positive memories of reading for the rest of their lives.
