Help me give my students a set of the Texas Library Association's 2019-20 award winning books for children aged 2 through 2nd grade. This list is known as the Texas 2 X 2.
Our elementary school serves approximately 600 students in Royse City, Texas. Our students range from Pre-K to 4th grade. We are a Title I school with 41% of our students classified as economically disadvantaged.
Our library strives to offer a variety of books to engage students of all levels, interests, and abilities.
My students are from varied backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses, and experiences. Our ethnic makeup is approximately African American 4%, Hispanic 40%, White 54%, and two or more races 2%.
My Project
Each year, the Texas Library Association nominates 20 books for the Texas 2 X 2 award program. 2 X 2 refers to the target age group, 2 years-old through 2nd grade.
These picture books are selected to encourage voluntary reading with our youngest students.
Our long term goal is to grow lifelong readers.
The titles cover a range of topics from not biting your friends, in "People Don't Bite People" to "Misunderstood Shark" about a friendly great white shark. A number of the books represent diverse characters, which will help us appeal to and represent our increasingly diverse student population.
