As a teacher in a low income/high poverty school district, I work with students who are faced with several challenges, both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I want my students to know that they are valued and I want to provide them with creative and meaningful learning experiences!
My scholars enjoy coming to school every day, and each day they are eager to learn something new!
They like to move, they love to read, and they are eager to seek positive attention. From the minute they walk in the door of the classroom, I am determined to focus on their potential and academic growth. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly help foster a nurturing environment and engaging learning experiences for them. By creating a love of learning I hope to inspire my scholars to continue on a path of academic excellence!
My Project
Testing is not something students look forward to when it comes to school. In reality, it can actually cause stress and anxiety amongst students. However, it is a reality they face every year. All year long I strive to create a classroom environment that my students feel safe and confident in.
By providing my students with the materials and resources needed to create a calm testing environment, I am setting my students up to be successful test takers.
My students need privacy folders to help them have total concentration during testing which will result in each student been able to work at their optimal level. It also helps to reduce the number of opportunities for student distraction or interruption during testing. Providing students with pre-sharpened pencils allows them to settle in and be worry-free when testing begins. Alos, peppermint has been found to increase alertness and lower stress, which is why I have began to give peppermint candy to students during tests. The aroma of peppermint has been found to enhance memory, and cognitive functions, making students more attentive.
