Help me give my students a snack during the long tedious sessions of standatized testing so that they can concentrate on the test, not on their stomach.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Every year, a least three times a year my students sit for hours taking standardized tests; ISTEP and ILEARN. My students often come to school on an empty stomach, even after eating the school breakfast, they are still hungry and not focused. Then, here comes hours of standardized testing. Many are not focused, lacking the energy to think and write for the test. More often than not, the first thing they ask as they enter the testing evrorinment is " do you have any snacks?' Most often the answer is " no".
My students most often come from home in the morning, having their last meal at school, lunch.
These students often lack focus and engery to engage in learning, let alone the stress of test taking for hours per day. To be able to offer them a nutritional snack while taking the standardized tests would enable them to focus on the test, not when is lunch, due to hunger.
Each time I administer he standardized tests to my students, I have to answer the questions: "will I miss my lunch?" " I didn't get to eat breakfast, do you have a snack?" From those conversations, my students have let me know.. I am hungry. I will have trouble concentrating. As a test administrator, I want my students to be successful on passing their standardized tests. As a test administrator, by providing a snack and and juice, I have given them substance to make it to the end of the test.
As a test administrator, I want my students not to focus on being hungry or missing lunch by providing them a snack and drink during testing.
