My Students

Do your best!! Try your hardest! That's what we tell our students on state testing. But how can they when they do not have the materials to practice before the test!!

We are a special education class in the inner city who has so much and needs so much.

What that means is they have so much enthusiasm to give to their learning but need so much in the classroom to further their education. The worst part for most of them is I am all they have. Their parents are not very involved and look to me to supply them with not all the school tools but love and support as well. My students want to give so much but have very little to work with. Things would be a lot easier for them if their working environment had the materials they needed as well as their own space to learn in. With many of my special education students having sensory needs, they often need to find a space for themselves to take a minute or just to work without distractions.

My Project

It is obvious that every classroom needs pencils to work, esp to take state tests. With the limited number the school gives us we are often running out and have nothing else to write with. How is that fair? They are here to produce evidence of learning. The classroom subscription to magazines provide opportunities for reading that the students are interested in, test taking practice pages and keep them involved in current events. I have asked for pencils to practice for the test and actually use them to test, a sharpener because the one in our classroom eats the pencils, and calculators because the students have it as an accommodation in their IEP and can use them to get the right answer.

There is no choice !!

Students have to take state tests. The amount of weight that is put on the tests and the students in tremendous. Now lets give them the materials to be successful.
