Testing Our Water Supply: An AP Environmental Science Lab
My students need hands on science! Water is an important aspect to everyday life. These materials, especially the pH meter and the dissolved oxygen meter are great tools and technology for my students to use.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am teaching AP Environmental Science and Chemistry for the 2017-2018 school year. One thing my students are very passionate about is the environment! They are constantly coming up with new ideas and suggestions that will better preserve the environment and the planet for future generations.
My students are caring, compassionate and full of this amazing energy to try to better the planet.
Working at a low income school, it is hard to set aside funds for anything but the basics. My students work hard, trying to create an environment that not only betters them, but the community as well. They participate in local community trash clean ups as well as the yearly national beach clean-up. These students will "donate" $5.00 so that we can afford a bus in order to travel the 70 miles to participate in the national yearly beach clean up. My hope is to instill this passion for the environment that my current students have, with future students. And together inspire our families and the community to do their part to protect this amazing planet we live on.
My Project
I am very excited to have been given the opportunity to teach AP Environmental Science this year. I have been starting this program from the ground up. As exciting as it is, it could be more exciting by offering my students hand on lab activities! This lab is the perfect combination of hands on science, technology and education that is guaranteed to get my students excited and involved in the environment.
Water is essential to life and I want my students to be able to look at and understand what is in water!
By using and understanding the tools in this lab, my students will gain not only a love for science, but also for the environment, their own health and water! The Dissolved Oxygen meter will teach my students how to calibrate the technology of the meter and use it to determine how much oxygen is dissolved in the water. Students will learn the difference between acidity and alkalinity by examining water pH and using pH probes. Even more important, the Coliform test kits will introduce my students to water safety by teaching them how to culture and count Coliform bacteria a form of E. Coli that often is reported about in the news, but my students have little knowledge about what it actually is. These instruments and test are essential in testing water quality for human consumption and use.
