Have you ever been somewhere and you could not understand what was being said or what you just tried to read? My students have moved to America to live the American Dream. They are here legally and are attempting to learn English, the most difficult language to master. We need help, please.
Some are from Bulgaria.
Some are from Iceland. Some are from Thailand. Some are from Peru. Some are from Mexico. These kids are from families who are struggling to make a living. They are all here legally and attend a rural school with more than 70% on free and reduced lunches. Some kids are here to escape the violence of the drug problems in their home countries. Some kids are here because their parents are trying to live the American Dream and work in better conditions than their home countries. For whatever reason, these kids do not speak English. Yet, our state and country have determined that they have to pass an English test to move through the education system. We need tools and resources in order to achieve the goal of mastering the English language in the amount of time that we have.
My Project
My students have to take a progress monitoring test each year called the ACCESS test. This test measures listening, speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension. Historically, my students fail the listening part, in large part due to school noise (announcements, hallway noise, classroom interruptions). With noise-canceling headphones, this school noise would be eliminated and help my students to be able to concentrate on listening to the test. My students are non=native English speaking students who come from all over the world: Ukraine, Thailand, Iceland, Bulgaria, China, Mexico, Peru, Russia, etc. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of this tool to help.
