Like any others, our school faces budget cuts at a most critical time. The state is moving forward with the inclusion of end-of-grade testing in eighth grade science. The eighth grade standard course of study in science includes the appropriate use of technology to gather, analyze and evaluate scientific knowledge. During the past year, I have been involved in on-going staff development which provided training on some of the technology. I have found the training invaluable, and would like the opportunity to share that enthusiasm with my students in the years to come. A large portion of the technology uses a Texas Instrument calculator and peripheral equipment. With this equipment, students will gain first hand experience with testing things such as temperature, dissolved oxygen in water, measuring pH in local streams, and testing things such as light intensity and voltage. If funded, this proposal will help our students to acquire skills related to almost half of the state's eighth grade science curriculum. I would like to provide my students with a "Middle School Science Package" from Vernier Technology, which includes a calculator-based laboratory; probes for measuring voltage, light and temperature; motion detector; pH sensor; and a middle school lab book. With this, how can students help but be excited?
