Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a low-income school, where around 75% of the students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. A majority of my students are also far below grade level when it comes to reading and writing.
Many of my students read and write below grade-level and are multilingual learners, meaning that English is not their first language.
Even for native English speakers, it can be challenging to read, comprehend, and interact with grade-level texts. For students who are behind, or who don't speak English as their primary language, it is far more difficult. Because of this some, of my kids have learned to dislike reading or have developed a fear of reading.
However, my students are some of the most resilient, funny and outspoken kids I've had the pleasure to know. My students are eager to learn and I know they can begin to enjoy reading again, with the right support!
My Project
Help me provide test prep materials for my 11th and 12th grade students!
My students have big dreams: they want to go to college, they want to earn scholarships and most of all, they want to graduate high school.
Unfortunately, students from low socioeconomic status tend to do worse on these types of tests than their peers who have access to practice tests, test prep books and tutors. As their English teacher, it is my responsibility to help prepare my students to do well on standardized tests and provide them with equitable access to instruction and materials. By having these materials readily available, they will gain valuable practice and exposure to help them succeed on these tests, and ultimately go after their post-secondary dreams!
