At the end of the year we have Field Day. We used to sell t-shirts with a cute logo to the students and each class wore a different color to show class unity and spirit. Then, the shirts became too expensive for all students to afford. This year, I want to make tie-dye t-shirts with my students!
I teach 1st grade at an AMAZING public school in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina.
I love the enthusiasm my students have towards learning. It is their enthusiasm that encourages me to look for ways to enhance my teaching and find great, innovative materials to make learning fun. Their love of learning is what drives me to give them the best because that is what they deserve!
My Project
Years ago, Field Day was a time for the different grade level classes to band together and cheer each other on through the various obstacle courses and races. Each class would wear a different color shirt with the yearly Field Day logo. The kids loved it.
Well, that tradition is gone, but I want to start a new tradition with my students...student created tie-dye t-shirts. These shirts will be unique like each one of my 1st graders but will also unify our class during the various events during Field Day. I can see my students now strutting out onto the field proudly showing off their colorful shirts, cheering our class to victory. Making these shirts will inspire teamwork and cooperation as we work together to put the rubber bands around the requested plain white t-shirts. Then a little science will be introduced as we talk about how the colors will be mixed and how the dye will interact with the fabric and rubber bands to create unique patterns!
Please help bring back the team unity and team spirit by supporting our tie-dye t-shirt project and provide the white t-shirts and tie-dye kits.
My students will cherish these t-shirts for many years and will remember the entire tie-dye process every time they wear their unique handmade creation. Let's all give a collective cheer of support...GO TEAM!
