Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"I pledge allegiance to myself and who I want to be..." Each day, we begin our class with a promise that helps my students focus on what they want to do and to learn today to make their future dreams a reality. It's a reminder that we start each day with a positive attitude. We know that there will be challenges, but we also know that we can handle them. We can't control our circumstances, but we do control how we respond to them.
"I can't wait to make a mistake!" From day one, we foster a safe community of learners in our room.
If a student doesn't feel comfortable, they won't try anything new. We are all learners, and support each other in taking risks and making mistakes, because we know that is where the real learning happens. Ours is a Title I school, serving a largely immigrant, Latino population, in a densely-populated urban city. Statistically destined to drop out before they complete high school, my students aspire to go beyond the stereotypes, and be the first college graduates in their family. There are no shortcuts!
My Project
We have been extremely fortunate to acquire some Wonder Workshop Dash Robots for our 5th graders. Unfortunately, they don't work with the Chromebooks we have, but the Fire Tablets are an inexpensive way to get the Blockly coding app into more students' anxious hands.
We learn by doing, and even more so when we're not afraid of trying or making mistakes.
The more time they get to spend directly coding the robot, the better. These tech tools make the difference in their learning. Problem-solving, engineering, creativity, cooperation, design, and revision all come into play with math, science, tech, and robots!
