As an Art Teacher, I have known my students since they were very young in second grade. Through the years I have gotten to know my students, and there are a few things that I have noticed they love, engaging lessons in which they can learn but experience learning live and not just on a screen.
What I wish to give my students this year in my classroom are lessons in which they can experiment with new/various materials used by artists from the past and today so that they can create artwork that exemplifies their growth as the young artists they are.
My students love to work with clay, and even more, create works that have a purpose other than just decoration. This year my students will be learning about art through different ages in history, such as Classical and Ancient History. Classical Art is famous for the sculptures and pottery produced in Greece and Rome.
The terra- cotta clay that is essential for this project is going to be molded by the students into a Greek-inspired vase with handles.
Once the clay vase is dry, students will then use black watercolor paint and brushes to paint the center of their vases in black, similar to Greek pottery. The skewers will then be used to etch patterns designed over the black painted area of their ceramic works.
The students will want to take these home right away to show off to their parents or guardians so the Modge Podge will be necessary! With the Modge Podge student's ceramic sculptures will be coated with a seal to protect it from outside elements and extend its longevity.
