My students need a saxophone of variety that can play the lower notes easily to make our band sound more full, and a tenor saxophone would be the logical next step.
I have more students interested in being part of the school band than can afford to, in terms of family demographics. Very few students are able to get their own band instruments from a dealer and are expected to rent the few low-quality school-owned instruments available and of very little variety. I have been happy to give what I can out of my limited income and expenses as the family bread-winner, but there is only so much I can do for these well-deserved students.
While a large number of students who have to opt to take choir are genuinely interested in singing, the very few students in band are unable to play a variety of music more desirable to them as a school band should be able to play..
Our community is rural, about 20 miles of winding road from our nearest major population center, and with a strong sense of local control desired in our school systems, we do not have an adequate supporting high school program or community non-profits for assistance.
My Project
Our small school is attempting to provide a well-round band experience for our students to comfortably participate in a larger high school band setting and experience the greater things in life through a musical outlet. I have chosen that the next logical step would be for our band program to have a tenor saxophone available for rental. Having already several alto saxophones and eager players for that instrument, it would be easy to convince one of the those students to play something lower and slightly bigger.
A tenor saxophone will add easily played lower notes needed for our small band to sound more like a full band yet from an instrument that isn't too large to comfortably play and carry for home practice.
