Dawson ISD is a Title I school and in a very rural area. We are a small school, but have very good results on state testing and students that go on to higher education, even though they are from low-income families. The school is very effective at teaching these students. Our teachers don't make what they could work in a larger district, but we have a low turn over rate because of the kids and the staff. Coach Brumley took over the tennis program 5 years ago and has helped the athletes reach the state tournament the last 3 years. We are family. We do what we can for each other and the students. It's not uncommon for the students and staff to be together until well into the afternoon, if they are in sports or other activities.
My Project
My students are mostly low-income and have found a sport that is fun and will last a lifetime. This portable net will allow them to practice indoors during our wet weather. We have been unable to practice due to the consistent rain we have at the start of our season.
My tennis kids don't always participate in the major sports that get the most attention, but they deserve the same supplies needed to be successful.
We have been fortunate to qualify for the state tournament for the last 3 years. We work of very limited funding due to the timing of the tournament. Schools don't make money from tennis like they do from other major sports that have audiences that pay an entry fee.
I have farming and ranching students that have found a sport that the will continue to play throughout their lives. This will lead to healthier adults and longer lives. I feel very fortunate to have the support from the kids and one of the most popular sports in the school. Without the kids support, I wouldn't have success. I just want to try to get them all of the supplies they need to allow them to be the best they can be. They understand that it is up to donations for them to get the equipment that it will take to continue being successful. They are low income and very appreciative when someone notices that they too can be great.
