Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"These girls are really good," exclaimed the top girls' tennis player at my school. She was about to play junior varsity tennis players from some of the top girls' tennis programs in Chicago at a Conference tournament. A few minutes prior, a coach from one of these other teams had asked to see her racquet - a cheap Wilson designed for basic play - and laughed at the lack of tension in the strings, explaining to this girl that her loaner racquet was in woeful need of restringing.
Despite having not played a minute of tennis prior to joining the team as a freshman, this girl ended up winning first place over the junior varsity players from these top tennis programs.
Almost none of the students who try out for the tennis team at the 96% low-income school I teach at have ever picked up a racquet before. Indeed, most of my students are first or second generation Americans, and tennis has not typically been a part of their lives. However, they quickly develop a passion and enthusiasm for the sport.
My Project
The supplies listed are the basics we need to start a foundation for tennis play.
Ten racquets and both practice and playing balls will provide the basic supplies needed for students to pick up tennis.
As none of my students can afford to buy a racquet for a sport they don't even know if they're for sure interested in, these starter racquets will allow them to try out the sport risk-free, and will ensure that no student is unable to play because they are unable to afford a racquet.
Disc cones will help students complete drills and practice the footwork critical for student success on the court.
