Tennis Balls to Help Fifth Graders Read

My students need 2 cases of tennis balls (4 for each chair) to cushion the feet of their chairs. This will contribute to making a quiet reading environment.

This is a classroom where reading is central to all that we do. Every day, as a part of Reader's Workshop, students have 40 minutes to read independently and write about their reading. For many of my students, this is the sole place where they have a safe, quite place to read, and we work hard together to make it a positive, quiet place to read.

During independent reading, students need to rise from their seats for many reasons: to sharpen a pencil, to get another book, to ask me a question or to join me for a literature circle. When they rise from their chairs, there is an inevitable "scrrrrrape." With this sound, some students look up from their books. For those students for whom extended focus is a challenge, these small yet necessary distractions can be the difference between a chapter read or 40 minutes wasted.

I hope to get enough tennis balls so that I can cushion the feet of the students chairs. This way, whenever a student needs to move a chair, there is a quiet, "whoosh" in lieu of a scraping sound.

Some students find it hard to concentrate on their reading, especially when reading is hard for them. Having a safe, quiet space is one important factor in creating a positive reading environment. Your contribution to this project could help students have more time to truly enjoy their books rather than succumb to distraction. Thank you in advance.
