Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students from our school have a fantastic work ethic despite their humble backgrounds. They love to help one another and work together. We are not a fancy private school: We are a public K-8 school located in the School District of Philadelphia.
Unfortunately, our school and school district suffer from a severe lack of funding.
We are a Title I school. Our budget is stretched so thin that unfortunately we haven't gotten new equipment in many years. In fact, we are in desperate need of tennis balls for our classroom chairs. During the day, students often move their chairs to work cooperatively with other students within the classroom. Our chairs are old and have lost the paddings on their legs, causing scratches in the floor and loud screeching noises. We would love to have a peaceful classroom environment to work.
My Project
The students in my classroom are eager scholars who seek a quiet learning environment. Throughout the day, they move to work cooperatively, visit learning stations, join in small group instruction, visit the classroom library, go to enrichment classes, go to lunch, or just use the restroom.
During the course of the school day students move from their chairs about 20 times a day.
Multiply that by 27 students and you can imagine the noise! The noise created by the chairs legs scraping when moved it very distracting to students trying to focus on their assignments. The requested tennis balls will be placed on chair legs to create a peaceful learning environment.
