Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is located in the urban South Side of Oklahoma City. Many of our students come from lower-income households and a large percentage of them are English Learners.
Our students are resilient, creative, flexible, and frequently silly.
They care for their peers, their families, and their community, and they come together to create a diverse and loving classroom.
Our students have been through so much this past year. The pandemic was difficult on everyone, especially children who dealt with constantly changing plans and never really knew what to expect. As we return to the school this August, I want to make sure I'm supporting my students as best as I can while they adjust after such a difficult year.
My Project
The team of 4th grade teachers spends much of our planning time creating our own resources for our students' learning. We are always looking for creative ways to help our scholars build a deeper understanding of what they are studying. Often, these lessons and activities come with lots of copies!
Our students use interactive notebooks they have created for every subject.
These notebooks include activities, reference pages, and skill practice. Most days, our students are cutting, glueing, writing, coloring, or creating in these notebooks. Usually, they are working with resources created and printed by their teachers.
We, the 4th grade teachers, are asking for a printer/copier, toner, and paper so that we are able to work on resources together, in our part of the building. This would allow us to spend more time on the important work, and less time wrestling to get 120 copies out of the old copier downstairs. We are hopeful that with these resources, we can provide our students with more opportunities to construct their own knowledge through their notebooks and other hands-on learning activities.
