This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are hungry to learn. They have chosen to come to a public school-of-choice in the heart of downtown Houston because academics are their first priority. Many of our students are first generation college goers. They come to Bridge Academy in the summer, stay after school for tutorials frequently, and even stay willingly for Saturday tutorials during the spring semester. In fact, many times our students would stay after school rather than go home! Despite their eagerness, they are often far behind in their reading level.

For many students, this will be the first year that they will be asked to read a full novel for school.

Because the school overall is 82% free and reduced lunch and many of our families are primarily Spanish-speaking households, many families do not have the means to surround themselves with high-interest books. Furthermore, many of the feeder middle schools are forced to focus on tested objectives at the expense of a deep reading of great literature. It is crucial that these eager students develop a love and value of reading!

My Project

The books that I have requested will help to replenish our classroom library with irresistible established reads such as The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Looking for Alaska as well as newer timely titles such as The Hate U Give. I have requested graphic novels for hesitant readers and book series to lull students into reading a second and even a third independent reading book. The majority of these books, particularly the mysteries were actually requested by last year's freshmen and therefore guaranteed to appeal to their target audience.

Your donation will help to foster a true love and value of reading that will serve these students well past their freshmen year on into their adult lives.

Because many of these students will come to me never having read a novel from cover to cover, it is critical that their first experience doing so be a positive one. Choosing these high-interest titles will help to make that a reality. The other supplies will allow us to do projects and games to sustain student interest after we have read when it comes time to analyze and demonstrate our ability to analyze through various written responses and projects.
