My students need these 6 science kit materials to better understand the principles of electrochemistry as it relates to Redox, cell potentials, half reactions, and related topics.
Electrochemistry is essential to the understanding of a special class of chemical reactions referred to as redox. The study of redox reactions requires specialized equipment currently not available to my students. The items requested in this project will insure success in learning!
High school chemistry is a prerequisite to enrollment in a four year college program.
I teach chemistry and honors chemistry to 10th, 11th, & 12th grade students who are enrolled in a high school located in a high-need, multicultural community. I teach three sections of high school chemistry. Two of the sections may be Honors classes, and the third is a standard chemistry class. The Honors classes represent sophomore and junior high school students. The regular class consists mainly of juniors and seniors. The Honors classes are challenged more in the curriculum. Our high school is located in a designated high-need, multicultural community. Interactive classroom activities are essential in all aspects of learning!
My Project
The study of Chemistry, in part, requires students to understand the nature of electrochemical reactions. Knowledge of oxidation/reduction reactions, half cell potentials, balancing half reactions and predicting metal and halogen reactivity are essential to this curriculum objective. My students will benefit from the hands-on experience of the activities provided by this project to augment their learning experience. The reality laboratory activity will reinforce the PowerPoint/Smart Board lesson plans associated with classroom presentations. Nothing concerning electrochemistry is more impressive than being able to actually visualize and measure the effect of electron transfer in oxidation/reduction reactions.
My school has little or no materials or equipment to support lesson plans associated with the study of electrochemistry.
Acquisition of the materials and equipment requested in this project will greatly enhance student understanding of content and definitely improve their comprehension of the topic. Most of the course content deals with the unobservable so any hands on and/or descriptive reinforcement is vital to successful student learning!!
