Our school and community value the arts. Not only do students study the arts as electives, but they also engage in arts in their regular classrooms. Our school is arts-integrated and implements a project-based curriculum.
My students are sensitive, creative, passionate, and talented, and they reflect the diversity of our city, New Orleans.
My students come from different backgrounds, but they are all united in their love of the arts and learning. My early elementary students are learning about the planets, gravity, and space exploration while my middle school students are studying Shakespeare. They are also passionate about being active members of their community! This year, all of our students participated in the Global Climate Strike.
I want to keep challenging my students so they can grow to reach their full potential.
My Project
Theatre is storytelling. In January, we honor Reverand Martin Luther King Jr. and in February, we celebrate Black History Month. My middle school students (5th - 8th grade) have a strong interest in social justice. Without prompting, they have discussions about equality, injustice, and race. Last year, they created a theater performance to portray the March on Washington.
This year, I want to begin with the philosophy of nonviolence that inspired the civil rights movement.
I am requesting 25 copies of March:Book One. The sit-in movement is an excellent example of students being empowered to effect important social change. I want my students to learn about the sit-ins and use those stories to create their own stories of social change. amazing resource to engage with the civil rights movement. This comic-book style autobiography will engage all my students!
