Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a curious, creative, and innovative bunch who come to school each day ready for the next set of challenges. They are eager to learn more about the world they inhabit. My students are interested and concerned about the social issues in the world they are learning about. They have developed an ever-growing sense of compassion to help those who have been hurt by hunger, poverty, and homelessness.
Sixty-one percent of students at our school are socioeconomically disadvantaged, and many children speak another language at home other than english.
Because of this rich, multi-cultural family background, my students are continually exposed to various perspectives, and they are eager to engage in conversations and projects that will lead them to a greater understanding of how others in the world live, work, and play. Our school and classroom is a place where students also benefit from our vibrant arts program in the four domains of the arts: visual, dance, drama, and music. There are also after school clubs in which any student may participate for free or a nominal fee.
My Project
Everyone loves to take photos of themselves as well as those they care about. My students are willing and eager photographers and in order to enable and empower them in a year-long project, they will need digital cameras to chronicle their sixth grade year and examine and express their growing sense of identity, as they learn about the visual arts medium of photography.
In this selfie-adept generation, learning to tell their story through photography will enhance not only their creativity, but expand their view of themselves in this world and help them develop a strong sense of self.
By the end of the year, students will have produced a series of portraits, both of themselves and their family and friends that tell the story of their emerging identities and their place in the world.
