Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in a small, rural agricultural community. Some live a half-hour drive from the nearest small town and a nearly two-hour bus ride from school. The high school in this community has enrollment of just over 500 students, and I have the pleasure of teaching nearly every one of these students during their freshman year. I have gained a great understanding, over the past 10 years, of what these students need.
My students deserve access to the same opportunities that other students receive.
It is my goal to make sure they receive this access. The demographics of our high school include a high percentage of families struggling with poverty, parents with low education levels, fragile residency status, learning English as a second language, and proximity to resources. But these challenges rarely deter my students from a desire to learn and live a meaningful life. They might not always have faith in themselves, but they do have faith in their school and their teachers. And we teachers are eager to develop our students' confidence while giving them all the tools they need to be successful.
My Project
Everyone has a family story of migration. Through a unit on human migration, students will study informational texts, narratives, documentaries, and an interactive game to prepare them for creating their own migration narratives or documentaries.
When students tell their family stories accurately, with language and techniques that engage others, they gain confidence in their language skill levels and increase their sense of connectedness to the world.
The novel, "The Border," in addition to being a compelling book for even the most reluctant readers, is also a great model of what a migration story might look like. So the novel can fulfill several goals pertaining to reading stamina, language skills, modeling of writing style, and broadening world perspective.
