Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a Title I school. The majority of my students receive free or reduced price lunch and come from homes where English is their second language. A large percentage of the population are "at-risk" and have focusing issues. Many of them come to school with little life experiences, such as going to the show or watching a play at the theater. Even though they have daily obstacles to overcome, they come to school eager to learn. Once they enter my classroom, I want them to be assured that they are in a safe, learning environment and that anything is possible!
My Project
"A picture is worth a thousand words!" This is especially important for my English Language Learners. Having a visual representation of what they are describing is so important, especially when it's related to the writing process.
This project will bring my students a digital camera that will help them with their digital storytelling.
The camera will be used for taking photographs. These pictures will be uploaded and printed out. They will help my students by having the pictures available to look at while they are writing a description. Students will type in their writing in their digital portfolio and upload the picture to their written piece.
One example of a project that we will be doing this year is "The Best of Me". Students will be asked to choose one of their features that is the most special such as their smile or their eyes. The digital camera will be used to take a close up photograph of their special feature. These will not only be able to be uploaded to their digital portfolio, but I will also be able to print them out. My students will be able to look at the print to find the vocabulary to describe what they see. With their digital portfolios, my students will be able to share their story with parents during Open House at the end of the year. They will also have a digital memorabilia that will remind them of their year in third grade.
