The wonderful students I work with are all preschool age, and many come from homes where multiple languages are spoken. Additionally, most receive free or reduced price lunch. However, they love coming to school and are enthusiastic learners! Since I'm a Speech and Language-Pathologist, all the students I work with receive speech and language services. This means they might have difficulty with speech sounds, understanding meaning or communicating their thoughts. But they don't let this slow them down!
I work in an urban school setting with two regular education preschool rooms, and one Early Childhood Special Education Room.
That means there is a large range of needs and skill levels, but I love the challenge. The children are so excited to start school, and love coming every day to see their teachers, friends and learn something new. At this age, not only are they learning academic skills, but also social interaction, how to tie their shoes and even something as simple as how to stand in a line! It may sound simple, but we were all there at one point.
My Project
The bookshelf in my speech room is crying out for some engaging preschool-level books to fill it! When I moved to early childhood, I was able to create a lot of materials but was sadly lacking in fun books that were at the right level for my students. Every day, we use books to work on our IEP goals. We work on understanding questions, sequencing information, making predictions, inferences and building our vocabulary. I try to build on the themes that the students are working on in the classrooms, as well as foster that love of reading. I love to read, and hope that providing books with informational text as well as fun stories will not only help these students to build on their language skills, but get them excited about what crazy new book their teacher might pull out the next day.
