Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in small groups with elementary school students on their personal speech and language goals. I focus each day on having my students learn to communicate effectively and positively, with a hope to create students who are strong academically and socially.
My students are elementary students in a Title I school.
This means that a high percentage of our students come from low income homes and are either failing or considered at risk of failing to meet current academic standards. They are kind and happy kids who are not yet aware of any disadvantages they face.
I am pleased to work with teachers and support staff whom I have found to be committed and kind educators. Our school struggles with a constant lack of materials to support our students' educational needs. I have spent a significant portion of my own salary to create a clean, organized and well supplied space for my students to learn in, but there is a constant gap between what would serve my students well and what I can provide.
My Project
A lot of my students are learning remotely this year. I would love to be able to provide each of them with these Mercy Watson books that are adorable and transition them from phonics readers to reading for pleasure.
These books use all the reading and language we work on in therapy sessions in a fun and integrated way.
I would also like to be able to buy teletherapy resouces using teachers pay teachers to support each of them individually. This year finding and creating good quality, digital resources that support speech therapy has been an ongoing challenge.
