Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My 20 eager 3rd grade astronomers are starting a unit on the Solar System. As part of the unit, I will introduce my students to telescopes (a 3rd grade science standard). When asked recently what a telescope is, only one of my 20 scholars had heard of one. My students come from inner city Los Angeles, where lights block the visibility of any celestial viewing. Furthermore, because few of my students' families have cars, my 'Fantastic Firecrackers' rarely get outside of the city lights, and thus, rarely have the opportunity to see the stars. One other important obstacle is our school does not own a telescope! Soon my class will be taking an overnight camping field trip far beyond the reaches of city lights. I would like to offer them the opportunity of viewing constellations on that evening with a telescope. There is a science kit that allows each child to construct his/ her very own telescope. I feel that this opportunity would offer an intimate understanding of this incredible science tool, how it works, and what it offers (the planets and the stars!). My students and I would be so grateful if you would donate the telescope kits to us.
