Help me give my students job site safety posters, an electrical safety kit, a safety harness, and other teaching manipulatives to teach hands-on job site safety and skills.
Peek into my classroom and you will find small groups of high school students donning safety glasses, carpenter's pencils tucked behind ears, tape measures clipped to belts and huge smiles on their faces as they concentrate on their current project. They look forward to spending two hours in this non-traditional class where they can be out of their seats moving around with hands-on learning. As the first female trades teacher in our district, I'm excited to open this opportunity up to all students and am especially excited to help young women feel comfortable and confident learning construction skills.
Construction class creates an avenue for my students to explore careers in STEM, promotes independence, and allows students to earn national credentials in construction.
For over twenty years, I have taught special education and science. As the construction teacher, I am beyond excited that I get to combine my love of woodwork with my love of teaching. I look forward to each and every moment with my students!
My Project
Safety first! Before my students ever set foot in the construction shop and before they enter the real world of work, they must learn about OSHA and safe work practices. With the materials from my project Teens@Work: Construction Safety, my students will cross over from merely reading about safety to demonstrating an understanding of safety on and around various construction site situations. With these hands-on materials and visual aids, my students will make real work-life connections to the importance of safe work practices; connections that just might one day save a life.
