My students need 19 books for Teen Read Week (Young Adult Library Services Association). These are the Best of the Best 2011 teen titles, voted on by teens. Let's read!
Today my students received a letter from Young Adult Library Services Association. Teenagers around the country voted on the Best of the Best teen books for 2011. We received a kit with bookmarks and with stickers to label the top 10 titles of the year. Now students would like to read the books!
I teach 130 tenth graders.
We had the blessing of books being donated to our classroom through our first Donors Choose project in September. The students have been devouring these books like crazy, and they are asking for more! What a wonderful problem for a teacher to have! We are in a high poverty school district and many of the newest popular titles are not on our small library's shelves. My students like to find new authors as well as to read books in series by their favorite authors. They don't always have the resources, however, to find new authors or new titles. That is where YALSA helps out. Each year, YALSA asks teens to vote on the best titles of the year. If I can keep these titles stocked on my classroom bookshelves, I know that my students will be engaged in current reading trends.
My Project
These are the top 10 books of 2011, as voted on by teenagers. In addition, I have requested books that are in the same series as the top 10 of 2011 so that students can continue to be engaged in the reading process. Teen Read Week is a wonderful event that will encourage teens in community reading. We will do book chats of the titles that have been ordered so that we can engage everyone's interest.
Students love seeing new books on their classroom shelves.
It sends them the message that reading is important, and also that they are important. My students would love to read the Best of the Best young adult titles as voted on by their peers around the country. Please help them to explore this love of reading and of sharing great books. Your donation is greatly appreciated by many, many students in Room 115.
