Mrs. Hornor from Dallas TX is requesting Art Supplies through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

Teens Haven't Lost Their Creativity! It's in the Library!

My students need these items to continue to build our creative spaces in the library. We will have a monthly makerspace activity but these items, especially the Cricut, can also be used on a daily basis.

My Students

As the original magnet high school in the country, we have a student population of over 4,500 students and 400 teachers and staff in one of Texas' largest urban settings.

We are the largest high school in our city and the 12th largest in the country.

We are also a Title 1 school. Though some of our students still attend some of the magnet programs at our school, the majority of our students are neighborhood students. Approximately 89% of our students are economically disadvantaged and approximately 58% of our students are at-risk. Due to the low socio-economic status of many of our students, many of them do not have the resources to create freely and many of them live in high-risk neighborhoods that limits outdoor physical activity.

My Project

Did you learn by being given the freedom to be creative and think out of the box? We want to continue to build and expand our makerspace in our library that encourages our students to be creators and think critically.

As a library that is striving to be a Future Ready Library, we have recently started to establish our creative space for our students.

Part of being a Future Ready Library is making sure there is a component where students are encouraged to be creators. We currently have a DIY project cart, a knitting cart, an art cart, and a green screen for students to produce lo-tech videos and pictures. We also successfully added a LEGO table and bike desk which has been wildly popular with both students and staff.

This year, we would like to have a combination of monthly and daily activities. Students will decorate their cell phone covers, make their own picture frames, create book wreaths for the holidays, design votive holiday ornaments, make and donate toys for shelter pets, learn how to make a healthy dorm meal on the cheap, how to mend clothing, make their own slime as a stress-relief activity, and learn how to do simple coding with our Sphero robots. Encouraging our students to create and use their tactile learning skills helps them be better learners, gives them room to express themselves, and encourages creative and critical-thinking skills.
