My Students

Throughout their lives, students remember music that has been important to them. Perhaps it was a children's song when they were young, a tune they sang in class in elementary school, and then a song they danced to in junior high. At each phase of their lives, music has been important to teens.

Our teens are affected by many outside elements - and often the music that they reflect upon and enjoy tells the story of their struggles and their successes.

Teens will learn about writing and organizing their thoughts through an exercise where they have to research the songs and lyrics that speak to who they are at each stage of their lives. They will then create a video that they narrate, including "The Music of My Life" as part of the project - which includes songs from each significant time in their memories.

My Project

An iPod will be used to connect music with the video students create as part of their project "The Music of My Life." Teens often are able to share their feelings and what's important to them through music. All of the students have a variety of backgrounds and experiences, yet they can share them through a connection with music.

Teens often have a difficult time "getting started" with writing and creating videos.

If we start with something they're familiar with - music - the lyrics in songs that are important to them - they can more easily communicate who they are - where they came from - and what they hope for in the future.
