My students need yoga mats to be able to participate in classroom yoga and to have a designated area when doing other indoor physical education activities.
I do not refer to the first graders in my class as students, but rather as friends, as we are comprised of a community of learners. We are friends who share, learn, and grow together each and everyday. We start our days saying good morning to each other as a way to remind ourselves that we are here to learn more than just what lesson plans or textbooks tell us. My first graders come to school to learn the importance of kindness, compassion, and friendship.
In my classroom, we are not inhibited by the four walls and standardized curriculum.
I encourage my students, just as they encourage one another, to ask questions, follow their passions, and pursue knowledge of their interests. I may teach reading, writing, math, and science, but I also teach social skills and other valuable life tools my students can use each and everyday. In my classroom, we come together as classmates and leave as friends.
My Project
In my class, learning far surpasses the expectations as my students leave as lifelong learners and well-rounded individuals. In first grade, the social-emotional development is key to this process. I feel it is important to continue to teach my students yoga, not only for the physical practice, but also for the benefits of relaxation, emotional release, and mental clarity.
This dedicated time during our week allows students to break away from the monotony of seat work to get their bodies moving and let their minds find peace.
I am asking for yoga mats to allow all my students the opportunity to have comfort and their own individual space when doing our weekly yoga routines. Additionally, the mats will serve as a physical education tool for times when we need to have recess, lunch, and/or P.E. indoors.
