I work at a wonderful high school. I love my students. Being the librarian, I see everyone from students with developmental disabilities who cannot tie their own shoes to students being accepted into Ivy League universities. Our school educates some of the wealthiest of the wealthy in our city and the poorest of the poor. I love the variety and I appreciate that our students mingle, not matter what their socio-economic level, just like adults do in the real world.
Our students are creative and deserve a chance to explore all sorts of learning opportunities.
Thanks to DonorsChoose.org, I've been able to add new experiences to our curriculum and the students tend to flourish when given the chance to use their intelligence, creativity and ingenuity.
My Project
I sponsor a book club that meets once a month. These students love to read just for the joy of it. They also appreciate being in the company of other students who read for pleasure. We kick back on a Friday afternoon and talk about the book we've read that month -- what we liked, what we didn't, what we thought worked and what we thought about characters.
Current educational studies show that reading fiction increases the reader's ability to empathize.
I'm working with amazing teenagers who are bright, compassionate and funny but they can't aways afford their own books.
