Neuroscience is exploding with new information in the common media everyday. Much of it is presented as very high level research, and this can make it seem distant and uninteresting. I want my Health students to learn about their brains and how they are put together and work.
My students are ninth graders who will be learning the state mandated health topics.
I plan to tie these topics together with having them study brain anatomy and how learning happens. They will posit and prove how the various health topics, (Physical and Mental health, Drugs, Adolescence, and Reproductive health) effect their brains.
My Project
"The Owner's Guide to the Teenage Brain" is a well regarded book that is written for the teen audience. As we read through the book, we will use the models and poster to help visualize and explore the brain and its functional areas. Being able to disassemble and see parts of the brain is something few people get to do in real life! One model slices through the middle so we can see all parts as they lie next to each other. The other model allows 3D dis-assembly of a complete brain - without the messy, gooey part!
The pre-frontal cortex is the last part of the brain to develop during later teen years.
This area affects decision-making. Knowing the influence of serious activities (drug experimentation, steroids, sexual hormones) on the brain will give them an appreciation of the impact on their brains and decisions.
