Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My teenage aides and I help our school liaise with parents on social media. The aides are very good at taking photos to post online. They want to also be able to scan student work (essays and pictures) and official school flyers.
They would then post these to the school website / Facebook / Twitter.
The aides are 13- and 14-year-olds who work with me for 3 periods each week in the school library. I am the school Media Specialist. Without the aides, this captain would have gone down with his ship years ago. There are about 15 aides. They shelve books, clean, make library displays, help prepare posts for the library and school website and for social media. The list goes on and on. It is amazing how organized and hard-working these young people can be. I guess a word or two about our school would be appropriate here. You should know that we are a K-8 center located in sunny South Florida. Tourism is the biggest local industry. Our parents tend to be immigrants working in low-paying jobs in local hotels, bars and restaurants. Over 3/4 of our children come from families with markedly low household incomes and so qualify for free or reduced-price school lunch.
My Project
Our parents love to read about the school on our website and on social media. Particularly on Facebook. We put a fair amount of photographs up - but we'd love to be able to post student work, too: essays, poems, pictures. We've tried photographing these, but glare and other lighting problems make that really difficult. It would also be great to be able to post flyers. You'd be surprised how often we are given a beautiful color flyer with important info for parents without, at the same time, receiving an electronic copy. It would certainly make our life easier and our websites much better if we could scan student work and flyers quickly into the computer.
We got together with our school Tech and searched Amazon for an economic solution to our problem.
We think we've found just the tool that we need. The scanner + accessories featured in this project are cheap and have good reviews. Please help out the library aides. We need to better communicate with our parents. Any help you might give would be much appreciated! Thank you.
