Mrs. Whaley from Memphis TN is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a 30 book classroom set of the book "Dreams to Reality: Help for Young Moms".
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Many of my inner-city (low income) students are already parents or are pregnant. I teach "Child and Lifespan Development" to 11th and 12th grade high school students in which many of them come from homes with little or no parental guidance. Many of my students have told me that they have learned so much in this class and that motivates me to do more in teaching about child development and teen parents.
I have 8 "Reality Care Babies" that I require my students to take home for a weekend. Many of my students (male and female) come back after that experience worn out and say it was hard. The experience of temporary parenthood has been provided for them. I feel I need to make it more personal and real to my students on a deeper level by sharing the reality of teen parenthood from other teen parents. I feel this book would be an excellent resource to use as a classroom set for my 50 students each semester.
The book "Dreams to Reality" can give inspiration to hopefully encourage teens to wait to become pregnant. If a teen is already a parent or pregnant, the book encourages teens to be ambitious and establish a goal plan for their lives. This book lays out helpful guidelines and possible pitfalls that face a young, single woman who cares for her child but refuses to lose her ambition. Money management, relationship issues, higher education, and ways to start fresh without starting over are discussed. This project will benefit the students in finishing high school, setting life goals, striving for higher education and learning about responsibilities of parenthood.
Personally, I have loved being a mom and have 3 grown children. I feel I have a lot to share and can influence and reach a lot of teens in learning about their future lives, education, parenthood and its responsibilities. Thank you very for the consideration of this request.
