Teen Activism: Race to Extinction A PBL Learning Experience
My students need business cards, poster paper, markers, printer ink, and mounting tape to make their professional presentations come to life during their school and community Teen Activism project.
My 6th graders give me a reason for walking into that classroom every day! They are talkative, energetic, fully charged AND they are also funny, inquisitive, and want to learn. Our school is a personalized learning school and students learn through authentic, real-life environments.
Ours is a school that promotes both personalized learning and project-based learning to allow each student to grow and master content AND skills at their level and ability.
This creates a truly intrinsic and experiential learning environment where the process of learning and applying those skills are the driving point.
My Project
Whether they realize it or not, students of any age can make a difference and have a clear, strong voice in any situation. It doesn't have to be big, like Malala or Alex Lin, but it can make have an impact in their community, school, or even just a classroom.
My students are learning to harness their voice and use it to make a change for the better by advocating for topics they are passionate about both locally and globally.
This project - starting with them making their own business cards with our classroom printer and the business cards we requested to promote their topic and the handmade posters they will share at our community event - will let them apply real-life passions and professional skills that will stay with them beyond the classroom into their REAL lives. Instead of the boring, traditional book report, they will be using authentic communication skills with an authentic audience.
