Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever seen a young child first discover a computer? Technology is the future of learning and will be the back bone of all careers fields. My students only have a radio! We need a technological boost to develop an early understanding of computers and to use for learning activities.
My students are preschool aged (3-6 years) and part of a early intervention special education program.
They all have disabilities ranging from autism to speech and language impairments. Many are non-verbal and need visual supports to access learning. My school district is very low-income. We are on a public elementary school campus. My students love school, and even though it's challenging, they come each day ready and excited to learn.
My Project
Occasionally, therapists will come into the classroom to work with my students. Sometimes, they bring an iPad with them with therapy apps to help the students access learning activities. I have never seen more motivation, more willingness to try a new activity, and such a quick learning curve as when the students get the opportunity to use the iPad. There are so many amazing educational apps to download to help nonverbal kids learn to speak, use sentences, practice math, and ultimately, to motivate them to work hard and have no fear of trying new things. The iPad would completely change my classroom and bring so much joy to daily learning and teaching!
It's so important to start teaching technology resources at a young age.
Also, finding things to motivate young minds is so difficult. Seeing a student with autism or speech impairments initiate communication or attend to a task for longer than they ever have because they love the iPad is so wonderful to see. It would enrich learning more than I can even imagine. Please help!
