My students need a projector and a room fan to connect with diverse learning styles in a comfortable environment.
"A picture is worth a thousand words." Nowhere is this expression more true than in today's classroom. Images and sounds help to engage students in a way that text alone cannot.
I work with a diverse group of students who are eager to learn, but unfortunately district budgets and outdated technology often hamper my ability to reach all of my students.
Because of different learning styles, I try to present things from as many different angles, and in as many many different ways as possible.
World cultures and geography, and global economics are absolutely vital in our modern interconnected world. Some of the concepts involved can be hard to grasp. A projector will allow the students with diverse learning styles to better connect with the material. For example, for changes in supply and demand, I can make animated presentations showing how shifts affect price and quantity. When I'm doing region overviews for Geography, pictures can be very powerful. For example, a picture of tsunami damage can give students more empathy for victims of disaster, or at least put an image in their minds to help remember the event. For the fan, well we don't have air conditioning, and it's very difficult for the students to focus (not to mention the teacher!) on hot days.
In an increasingly interconnected world, it is more important than ever that future citizens have a better understanding of both the wider world, and the economic forces that are shaping that world in such a dramatic fashion.
This is my primary focus as a teacher. This project will give me the tools to help reach as many students as possible and to engage them on a deeper level.
